Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL
Why should I have my teeth checked six monthly?
Problems in your mouth can happen and deteriorate quickly, without you even knowing. Once pain happens it’s usually too late to do minor procedures. Small decay can get much larger and gum disease can progress quickly. By having your teeth checked and cleaned every six months, we can detect small issues before they become major issues, and this makes the treatments when required simpler, more affordable, and comfortable.
Why do I need x-rays?
Just by looking in your mouth, we cannot see in between your teeth or below your gums, X-rays are our eyes in these areas. They allow us to see small decays forming in-between the teeth, bone level surrounding the teeth, infections around the ends of the roots, and what may be happening with our teeth below the gums.
When should my child first see a dentist?
We recommend around 2 years old. At Renew, we encourage you to bring them along when you have your six monthly check and clean for a ride in the chair or even a quick look.
I brush my teeth everyday, why do my gums still bleed?
Gums bleed when they are unhealthy, the bacteria in dental plaque (the furry stuff that builds up on your teeth) pumps out poisons onto your gums and makes the gums bleed.
Daily brushing and flossing to remove this plaque, and professional cleaning, will reduce the bleeding and the risk of gum disease. If you have trouble getting floss between your teeth or it’s just too awkward, we can recommend other products to help.
Why are my teeth sensitive?
Teeth can become sensitive for many reasons
- Hard brushing
- Worn teeth
- Decay
- Acid erosion
- Infection
A comprehensive check-up and clean will help get to the bottom of this
How long can I wait to get my fillings done?
We always recommend to get your fillings done as soon as possible; decay continues in your tooth until the filling is done. Decay can go from small to large in just a few months, going from something that just needs a small filling to a large filling or even a root canal. Treating decay early keeps the tooth stronger, is more comfortable and easier on your hip pocket too.
