The reasons why we can use botulinum toxin, usually Botox or Dysport, in the jaw are:
Therapeutic Use:
Botulinum toxin injections into the masseter muscles can be used to alleviate symptoms of bruxism and tempero-mandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). Bruxism is the involuntary clenching or grinding of teeth, often during sleep, and can lead to various dental issues and discomfort. TMD is the range of symptoms associated with overuse (parafunction) of the jaw joint complex, such as chronic headaches, ear pain, neck stiffness and clicking or popping of the jaw.
Cosmetic Use:
Botulinum toxin injections can be used to slim the appearance of the lower face by reducing the size of the masseter muscles. This is often sought after for aesthetic reasons, as a slimmer jawline is considered desirable by some individuals.
Procedure:
Botulinum toxin is injected directly into the masseter muscles, causing them to relax. The procedure is relatively quick and relatively pain free.
It may take a few weeks for the full effects to be noticeable, and the results are temporary, usually lasting between 3 to 6 months. Repeat treatments are generally required to maintain the desired outcome.
While side effects are generally mild and temporary, they can include bruising, swelling, and rarely, temporary difficulty in chewing.
So if you’ve been suffering from TMD and all the usual therapies are not really working for you or if you’ve noticed that your jawline is getting squarer, talk to the team at Renew Dental Lounge. We may be able to offer you an alternative.
